Albanese gets married, becomes first sitting Australian PM to wed
Reflecting on the occasion, Albanese said:
"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends."
The couple became engaged on Valentine’s Day last year, with both the proposal and the wedding reception hosted at the Prime Minister’s official residence, The Lodge. Plans for the wedding had been kept private for security reasons and to avoid disruptions.
Family members in attendance included Haydon’s parents and Albanese’s son, Nathan, from a previous marriage. Their dog, Toto, served as the ring bearer, while the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours). Albanese also shared a video on social media capturing the moment as guests showered them in confetti.
Several cabinet ministers attended the ceremony, and at the reception, the couple danced to Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight. Personalized beer cans featuring the couple’s engagement photo were also part of the celebrations.
The newlyweds plan to honeymoon within Australia from Monday to Friday next week, a scaled-back trip following Albanese’s re-election in May. Albanese, 62, and Haydon, 47, first met at a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020, during his tenure as opposition leader. Haydon has been a visible presence during Albanese’s 2022 and 2025 election campaigns, attending major events such as the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and a state dinner hosted by former US President Joe Biden.
Albanese previously made Australian history as the first sitting prime minister to become engaged while in office. At the time, the couple remarked:
"We are so lucky to have found each other."
