Macron, Starmer Schedule Meeting at Downing Street
The meeting follows a report from a news outlet, which suggested that Macron privately attributed the worsening of the crisis to Starmer, accusing him of making the UK more enticing for migrants.
Nevertheless, the Elysee Palace strongly refuted the allegations, asserting: "The French president looks forward to working with the Prime Minister constructively on this shared priority."
Central to the conversation is Starmer’s proposed “one in, one out” arrangement.
Under this system, the United Kingdom would return individuals arriving via small boats to the European mainland, while in return, it would accept asylum seekers from Europe who have pre-existing connections to Britain.
President Macron touched down in the UK on Tuesday, marking the first official visit by a European Union leader since the Brexit transition.
His stay encompasses a variety of political and cultural functions.
In addition to their diplomatic agenda, Macron and Starmer are anticipated to attend a UK-France business gathering and participate in a special occasion hosted at the British Museum on Wednesday.
Their partners, Brigitte Macron and Lady Victoria Starmer, will also be involved in the state visit.
The itinerary includes tea and a guided tour of Downing Street, culminating in a private luncheon with all four attendees.
